Into the Attic

Guided by Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space as well as contributed essays included in Odette England’s Keeper of the Hearth: Picturing Roland Barthes' Unseen Photograph, I climb up the creaking ladder into my forbidding attic with compassion and respect for its site of storage and secluded solitude.

Presented is an excavation of the attic of my childhood home centering on the attic as a universal space of stored memory and verticality.

Artistically concerned with space, its structure, contents, and embedded memories. I focus on photography and the planes of the image, the difference between the meaning and context of capturing a space versus the sensibility of being lured towards details within the space. By combining formats of old and new technology I generate the experience of remembering and the passage of time.
